UPDATE: Two bodies found in the Wisconsin River

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- Wausau Police have confirmed emergency crews found two bodies in the Wisconsin River near downtown Wausau.

Police said three people were swimming in the river this afternoon when one of them appeared to be in distress around 4 PM. Police confirmed the swimmers jumped off the railroad bridge and into the area north of the dam. One of the other swimmers tried to rescue the distressed man and police said both of them ended up underwater. Police said both men were in their mid-30's. They were last seen near the Scott Street bridge on Stewart Avenue in downtown Wausau.

The Wausau Police Department responded to the scene first and were joined by the Wausau Fire Department and Marathon County Sheriff's Department. Some crews went out on an inflatable raft to look for the men while others searched along the shore. Around 5 PM, the joint dive team went into the river and found the two bodies within 2 hours of the initial call.

Police said the bodies were found about 15-20 feet off shore, near the area where they were last seen. Authorities said the shore around that area is steep. Police are investigating whether alcohol may have been a factor in the incident.

The area between the dam and the bridge is roped off because authorities say the current is strong in that area. Signs explain that boats shouldn't even be in the area.  The railroad bridge is also a part of private property.
