6-year-old Eleanor starts project to help storm victims

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) -- A six-year-old Stevens Point girl puts together a plan to raise money for storm victims across the country. Eleanor Knippel's a little girl with big aspirations.

Eleanor's never been to Merrill. And she hasn't seen a tornado in real life either. But when she saw storm damage on TV, she knew she had to do something.

"We saw a video and I said, Mom, we've gotta do this now," said Eleanor.

"Initially she wanted a lemonade stand," said Eleanor's mom, Jennifer Brilowski. "And about ten minutes later, she came up to me and said, that's not going to raise enough money."

So after a bit of brainstorming, Eleanor and her family thought up a new plan -- a rummage sale.

"My mom couldn't say no," said Eleanor. "And so I came up with the idea in a snap."

From baby clothes to toys and everything in between, Eleanor and Jennifer started collecting.

"I'm happy I'm doing this and I'm really excited and I really want to help those people," said Eleanor. "I don't want them to have no homes."

Even little sister, Elizabeth's pitching in where she can.

"I'm going to raise money for all the people who have no homes," said 4-year-old Elizabeth Knippel.

While Eleanor handed out flyers, Jennifer began an online campaign, using Facebook and Twitter to spread the word, reaching people from Wisconsin and beyond. They plan to split the money they raise between the Red Cross here in Wisconsin and the national group.

"It doesn't matter how old you are, it doesn't matter your situation in life," said Jennifer. "There's always something you can do to help somebody."

With preparations paying off, Eleanor gets ready for this Saturday, the day her sale starts, in hopes for a brighter future for storm victims everywhere.

"They're going to be okay as soon as this rummage sale is over," said Eleanor.

The rummage sale starts on Saturday, June 11th at 9:00 AM at Kristin's Riverwalk in Stevens Point. To find out how you can get involved with Eleanor's efforts, you can find a link to her Facebook event page by clicking here.
