GREEN BAY (Press Release) - The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters failed to score in two bases loaded situations early, and committed four errors late in a 7-3 loss to the Green Bay Bullfrogs on the road Tuesday night.
Starter Jacob Doyle seemed to cruise through the first five innings in Green Bay, allowing just a solo home run with two outs in the third. Then, with the Rafters leading 3-1, the righty allowed a single and a double to put two on with no outs to start the sixth. A ground ball cut the Rafters lead to one. Doyle faced just one more batter, issuing a walk, before Michael Russo came on in relief. The first batter he faced, singled up the middle to score two, making it 4-3 Bullfrogs.
Cody Koback over-ran the RBI single in center, beginning a string of four Rafters errors. After Seth Wheeler recorded out number two by throwing a runner out at third, Russo allowed an infield single, and his own throwing error advanced the runner to second. A wild pitch moved the runner to third before a walk and a single produced another pair of runs. Russo walked one more and gave way to Evan Stermer with runners on the corners. Another pair of Rafters errors allowed the sixth and final run to score before the nightmarish inning ended on a pop up to third.
The Rafters managed a pair of extra base hits and two walks over their final three at bats, but could not score. Brandon Hohl ended the night 4-for-4 with a walk while Bobby Martin and Curtis Frisbie each notched an RBI. The Rafters had golden chances to extend their early lead, but a double play erased a bases loaded threat in the third and the bats left the bases full again in the top of the sixth.
The road trip continues in Green Bay Wednesday before the Rafters return home for one game. Thursday, June 16 the Rafters are back at Witter Field for Riverview Family Clinic night at 7:05.
