Walker promises swift action on budget

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Scott Walker promises swift action on his budget now that it's passed the Republican-controlled Legislature without a single Democratic vote.

Walker said in a statement after the budget passed the Senate on Thursday night that he would act within days on signing and issuing vetoes, if any.

The $66 billion two-year spending plan generated weeks of protests.

Democrats say the budget will devastate public education, health care and programs for the poor due to deep cuts. But Walker and Republicans who supported it said they were putting the state's finances back on track.
