Gov. Walker signs new bear hunting law

ROTHSCHILD (WAOW) -- Gov. Scott Walker signed a bill Friday loosening standards for bear hunting.

The new law will allow holders of a Class B bear license to shoot and kill bears if the bear was already shot, and if the hunting party is in danger. Currently, holders of that license are not allowed to shoot bears at all.

The new law also gives a free hunting weekend in August. Additionally, it changes the required age for obtaining a Class B bear license from 12 to 16.

"We want to have more people involved, taking advantage in a positive way of our natural resources whether it be our lakes, our land, our woods," said Walker. "One of the key ways comes in hunting and fishing and trapping."

The new law takes effect immediately.
