Census data shows more homes led by single dads

APPLETON (AP) - The latest census figures show a growing number of single dads in Wisconsin are taking on the responsibility of raising their kids alone.

Households headed by single dads with children under 18 have risen by 35% since 2000. It's the largest growth among family households in the state.

Single-mother households reported the next-largest growth at 13%.

Katherine Curtis is a demographic specialist and faculty affiliate of the Applied Population Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin. She says society tends to focus on single-mother households because of traditional ideas.

Married couples with children continue to make up the majority of Wisconsin households - at 68.5%. That number has gone down by 10% since 2000.
