WAUPACA (AP) -- A federal lawsuit accuses Waupaca County of gender discrimination for failing to promote a female sheriff's deputy.
The lawsuit was filed Monday by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Prosecutors say Julie Ann Thobaben is a 16-year veteran of the Waupaca County Sheriff's Department. They say she was denied a promotion from patrol officer to detective sergeant in 2006 because she's a woman.
According to court documents, the county said it denied the promotion because of its nepotism policy. Thobaben's husband is a patrol office in the department.
The lawsuit says Thobaben wouldn't have directly supervised her husband. It also says the department ignored the nepotism policy in at least eight other cases where men were promoted.
A message left with the county Monday was not immediately returned.
