New cigarette warning labels released

Posted:

ABC NEWS -- The FDA rolls out nine new cigarette warning labels today that depict in graphic detail the dangers of smoking.  Among the graphic photos, rotting and diseased teeth and gums and a man with a tracheotomy smoking.

These new warning labels will appear on all packaging and cigarette advertising in the United States by September 2012.

The labels feature images such as a baby in intensive care with the words "Smoking can harm your baby" and a picture of a, presumably, dead man with stitches running up his chest with the words "Smoking can kill you" as well as warnings about the harm smoking can do to non-smokers.

All warnings take up half of the packaging and contain the phone number 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

The warnings are required under the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act.
