BATTLE CREEK, MI (Press Release) - Trailing early, the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters bullpen held the Battle Creek Bombers scoreless over their final six at-bats, allowing the Rafters offense to come back with a 3-2 win Thursday night.
Two runs off of Brian Hill had the Bombers out in front early. Hill left the game after the third with 65 pitches. The lefty allowed two runs on four hits with four strike-outs. Jacob Doyle allowed just a single hit over three innings, notching three punch-outs. Evan Stermer pitched a scoreless seventh inning, with a pick off, to send the Rafters to the eighth trailing 3-2.
With just three hits through the first seven innings, the Rafters turned to Sam Montgomery off the bench. The Oregon State junior promptly doubled down the third base line to lead off the inning. After a walk and a strike out, the Rafters had two in scoring position for Justin Jirschele who lined a single towards the gap in right to tie the game. Then following a walk and an error, Brandon Hohl worked a walk with two outs to give the Rafters their 3-2 lead.
Kevin Wild continued the scoreless string out of the pen with a perfect one-two-three eighth inning, including a strike-out. Joie Dunyon came on in the ninth for the save and set the Bombers down in order striking out one to get the Rafters the win.
"It really came down to throwing strikes tonight in the late innings," Assistant Coach Jake Martin said. "Every one of the relievers spotted their fast-balls, then that set them up for success, getting outs with off-speed pitches."
The win is the Rafters fifth of the season, their first come from behind victory when trailing after five innings this year. Game two of the series is scheduled for 6:05 central time at C.O. Brown Stadium. The return home Monday June 27 and Tuesday June 28 for two games against the Waterloo Bucks.
