UWSP students help rescue fish during McDill Pond draw down

WHITING (WAOW) -- Efforts to save the fish in McDill Pond continue with UW-Stevens Point students pitching in. The fish are under stress as water is drawn down 10 inches a day in an effort to figure out why McDill Pond Dam is leaking. The leak has already resulted in the shutdown of Highway HH, which overpasses the water. The DNR banned fishing last week and the continuing lowering of water levels make the fish easy targets for predators. Water resources students are lending a hand by catching the small fish and moving them to safer waterways.

"Then you pull them out on shore and put in some buckets and drag them back out to the river," said UWSP sophomore Travis Kahl.

Students spent several hours Monday gathering about 40 fish in a smaller pond where they didn't make it to larger water in time. Students will move on from here to rescue more in other areas.
