Appleton teachers retain collective bargaining

Posted:

APPLETON, Wis. (AP) -- The Appleton School Board has approved a one-year contract extension with teachers and support staff that nearly parallels concessions the state is seeking, but retains some collective bargaining language.

The Wisconsin law that reduces collective bargaining for most state employees becomes law Wednesday after it was upheld by the Wisconsin Supreme Court earlier this month.

Appleton teachers will contribute 5.8 percent to their pensions and 12 percent toward health insurance premiums. Teachers union president Candi Breitengross says it's a morale boost knowing educators have a bit of stability next year. WLUK-TV (http://bit.ly/kDLNPM) says union terms for grievances, sick time and work flow will not change.
