Summerfest starts in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The world's largest music festival is in full swing.

Summerfest started Wednesday along Milwaukee's lakefront, with Peter Gabriel headlining the Marcus Amphitheater and Meat Loaf, Buddy Guy and Hall & Oates among the evening acts on the other 10 stages. The big fireworks show was expected at dark Wednesday.

The festival is expected to attract 800,000 to 1 million through July 10. This is the first year it will be closed for the holiday, July 4th.

Other headliners this year include Kanye West, Toby Keith, Jason Mraz, Kid Rock, Def Leppard, The Black Keys, Katy Perry, Britney Spears and Sugarland. There are over 700 bands planned.

The festival says it has increased its efforts this year to go green, including using recyclable cups and doubling recycling bins.
