Jet ski safety tips

MINOCQUA (WAOW)-- The upcoming holiday weekend has people over the state getting ready to hit the water.  But if you plan to use a jet ski, there are some important safety precautions to keep in mind.

What makes jet skis prone to incident is their unique handling system.  If the throttle isn't engaged, you won't be able to steer.  This makes it especially important to seek training before jumping on.

DNR Warden Ban Herzfeldt says the majority of accidents could be prevented by simply slowing down.

"They're very fast. It's not uncommon to see boats that will go over 60 miles an hour," he says. "They're also very maneuverable. At a high rate of speed you can turn the boat very sharply, which can cause people to fly off and hit other objects."

There are several state regulations in place regarding the use of jet skis.  You can find them online here.
