Rafters Doubled-Up in La Crosse

LA CROSSE (Press Release) - Without a hit through the first three innings, the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters ended up with plenty of scoring opportunities, but the La Crosse Loggers pitching staff stranded 11 base-runners on their way to securing a 6-3 victory Wednesday night at Copeland Park.

The Rafters first chance at blowing the game open came in the top of the second. Without the benefit of a hit the Rafters loaded the bases, but stranded all three. The same story continued in the top of the fourth, this time the Rafters loaded the bases, with no one out. Two outs later the Rafters had still not scored. Brandon Hohl did pick up a clutch two out single to plate a single run. The Rafters eventually left the bases loaded for the second time in the game.

Brian Hill dodged in and out of trouble through his start, but eventually was saddled with the loss. Rafters errors, coupled with a few mental defensive mistakes, kept early innings rolling as the lefty allowed five runs, four earned, working into the sixth inning. Jacob Doyle and Tommy Danczyk held the Loggers scoreless in the sixth and seventh.

Trailing 5-1 into the top of the seventh, the Rafters managed to score two runs and make the game close again. Cody Koback and Hohl hit back to back doubles to lead off the inning, cutting the lead to three. Hohl, now with two RBI on the night, eventually scored from second on back to back wild pitches.

After a scoreless Loggers seventh, a walk from Kyle Peterson and a Bill Charvat single put two on with no one out in the top of the eighth. A wild pitch moved the runners to scoring position, but the next three Rafters went down harmlessly, stranding two more. Kevin Wild allowed a run in the bottom of the eighth and the Rafters went down in order, on three strike-outs, in the ninth sending the Rafters to their nineteenth loss.

When the two game road trip to La Crosse wraps up Thursday, the Rafters return home for a two game weekend home stand. The Loggers come to town at 7:05 Friday and the Eau Claire Express come to town on Sunday at 6:05.
