Milwaukee police increase officers at some bars

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Milwaukee police are trying a new approach to fight crime and help tourism in the downtown area.

Capt. Stephen Basting says they've started a 12-week trial that stations more officers in entertainment areas with a lot of taverns from Thursday through Saturday nights.

Basting says the department has policed the area the same for 25 years and it's developed drastically in that time, so they needed a new approach.

He also says the downtown area is one of the safest but many suburban residents don't believe that, so having an increased police presence will help people be and feel safer.

Chief Ed Flynn says they plan to reevaluate the plan after Labor Day but the effort will likely continue after that. He says he's confident it will help economic development.
