US & Japanese Automakers

(AP)--Detroit automakers have far more U.S. dealerships than their Japanese competitors, and Detroit's showrooms are generally older. As a result, Japanese-brand dealerships sell have far higher sales, make more money and have more to invest in buildings and advertising.

Here are 2010 sales figures per franchise by automaker. A franchise is a dealer's right to sell a particular brand of car. So a dealer who owns a Buick-GMC-Cadillac dealership would have three franchises.

-- Toyota Motor Corp.: 1,200.

-- Honda Motor Co.: 944.

-- Nissan Motor Co.: 730.

-- Ford Motor Co.: 370.

-- General Motors Co.: 225

-- Chrysler Group LLC: 171.
