New Rib Mountain road, trail expected to draw holiday crowds

RIB MOUNTAIN (WAOW) -- With the holiday weekend upon us, many people are enjoying the new road and trail leading up Rib Mountain.

It took a year for construction to completely wrap up. On Monday crews completely re-opened Park Road. Part of it had been closed for construction.

The mile-and-a-half project involved renovating the road and installing new asphalt. In addition to the new road, crews updated the water and sewer systems. They also built a new walking and biking trail which opened last November.

One walker told Newsline 9 she feels much safer now that the trail is separate from the road.

"I'm a lot safer walking on a pathway than walking on the road," said Mary Kowatch. "My husband does bike this quite a bit so he appreciates the bike lane."

An official with the Department of Natural Resources says the department has received several compliments about it.

"The trail, hiking trail, has proven to be very popular so far this spring," said William Bursaw, DNR property manger. "People are using it. We've seen a lot of people walk that have never walked before, so it's proving to be a very popular attraction."

Bursaw says the DNR expects a lot of people to visit Rib Mountain this holiday weekend.
