Democrats file complaint against Northwoods Republican

MADISON (WAOW)--A Northwoods Republican candidate for State Senate says a staff member is to blame for missing information on a campaign mailing.

Thursday the state Democratic party filed an ethics complaint with the Government Accountability Board against Kim Simac (R-Eagle River), who is running for the 12th State Senate seat in the recall election. Democratic Party of Wisconsin Executive Director Maggie Brick submitted the claim, along with copies of the mailer that show the campaign piece does not have a "Paid for by" disclaimer. Wisconsin election statutes require the disclaimer on all campaign advertising.

Simac's Communication Director Matt Capristo acknowledged the error Thursday and issued a statement saying it fell through the cracks. "As the staff member responsible for drafting and seeing that the mailings go out. I take responsibility for the oversight of not having a full disclaimer attached to this mailing," Capristo said in a press release. "While the method of communication clearly identified the campaign committee and treasurer it did not say, Paid for by."

The Communications Director for the Wisconsin Democratic Party says the error reveals a more systemic problem for Simac's campaign. "While it's easy to write this off as a one-time mistake by a staffer, the buck stops with Kim Simac," Walzak wrote in an emailed statement. "For a candidate who talks a lot about individual accountability, Kim Simac sure seems to be ducking her responsibility for her own campaign."

Capristo says the Simac campaign is working with the GAB on recourse.

Because of state statutes regarding election laws, the spokesperson for the GAB could only confirm that the Democratic Party filed a complaint. He could not comment on the complaint's substance.
