RIB MOUNTAIN (WAOW) - As the new trail was built at Rib Mountain State Park, DNR leaders thought the time was right to convert overnight campsites into a day use facility.
A DNR study showed the numbers for overnight camping were down.
Instead, most visitors were there for activities like hiking, and climbing rock formations and the observation deck.
So the 30 campsites are converted this year into picnic areas, with shelters, grills and tables.
William Bursaw/Wisconsin DNR: "The old campground was 30 sites and to bring it into design standards and make it a nice campground, we would've went to 15 sites so it really wasn't the most cost effective use of the dollars."
Instead, the DNR spent the money on places like Harrington Beach and Willow River State Parks.
They have a long range plan at Rib Mountain to develop a group campsite and hiking/wilderness sites.
