Police increase presence over holiday weekend

RIB MOUNTAIN (WAOW) -- Extra Wisconsin State Police officers are out in force as the holiday weekend kicks off.

Police say a lot of people will likely take a long weekend to go somewhere. Over the next few days, Wisconsin State Police are increasing patrols by 25 or 30 percent.

Police will watch for dangerous driving. They say drivers can help by calling in anything they see. Plus, police are on the lookout for drunk drivers.

"When you consider the increases and the amount of traffic out there, and the kind of damage that even one impaired driver can do, we're being especially vigilant about that over this weekend," said Cpt. Timothy Carnahan.

But not everyone is traveling. Mosinee resident Dennis Hotchkiss a boat and a camper, but he won't be using them this weekend. Part of the reason is the price of gas. Wisconsin's average for a gallon of gas is $3.56, according to AAA. That's about 80 cents higher than last year.

"You can't afford to go out boating anymore," said Hotchkiss. "Taking a camper, just ridiculous."

Hotchkiss says he plans to do yard work over the holiday weekend.
