WAUSAU (WAOW) - The Wisconsin Woodchucks are out of the running for the 1st half championship in the Northwoods League South Division, but they have a chance to turn things around in a timely manner. After finishing their 7-game, 6-day road trip with a 1-6 record and 6 straight losses, the Chucks rebounded at home on the 4th of July.
Hosting 2nd-place Battle Creek, the Woodchucks scored 2 in the 2nd inning to grab an early lead. Trailing 3-2 in the 4th, they put up another 2-spot. Wisconsin took the lead when, with the bases loaded, Kyle DeMerritt was hit in the helmet by a pitch. The Woodchucks never trailed again, winning 11-7.
Plenty of Chucks put up big numbers at the plate in this one. Austin Coleman homered to highlight his 3-for-3 night. He drove in 2 runs and scored 3 times. Carlos Escobar, Jr. also drove in a pair, going 4-for-5 with 2 runs scored. Shane Batty was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and 2 scored. And DeMerritt went 1-for-2, driving in a pair. UW-Stevens Point pitcher Ryan Iverson worked 2 1/3 innings in relief for the Woodchucks. He gave up 2 runs, 1 earned, on 3 hits, while also striking out 2 batters.
