MI Project Aims To Rebuild Iraq

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- A project aims to put Michigan's manufacturing muscle to work on rebuilding Iraq.

The Lansing State Journal reports Tuesday that Iraqi National Investment Commission officials are working with state economic development officials on a plan to build at least 100,000 housing units in Iraq. The proposal came from commission chairman and Michigan State University engineering graduate Sami Al-Araji.

The goal is to gather a group of Michigan businesses to bid on the project that would involve planning, designing and building apartments and homes. Work also could include hotels, shopping centers and offices.

Commission officials say Iraqi builders lack the financial and technical resources for large developments. Michigan offers products as well as intellectual, academic and manufacturing knowledge.

Officials estimate the project is worth as much as $6 billion.
