Wisconsin firefighters lend hand around the country

RHINELANDER (WAOW) -- This year's wildfire season has been intense across the country. Some fire crews from Wisconsin are lending a hand.

The U.S. Forest Service has sent crews to help fight fires in the southeastern United States. They also played a role battling the massive blaze in Arizona.

Suzanne Flory, public affairs officer with the U.S. Forest Service with the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. She says firefighters work 16 hour days or longer, and they live under extreme conditions. But she also says they get a lot of satisfaction from helping out.

Recently, a crew from the Washburn district headed west to help fight the Wallow Fire in Arizona.

"I can say I heard some great things about them on the Wallow Fire," said Flory. "I heard they were the go-to crew, so it's really a good experience for our folks to get out west and take part in some of those incidents. A little different than here in Wisconsin, but a good experience for them."

Authorities in Arizona say the Wallow Fire has now been all but contained—thanks in part to Wisconsin firefighters.
