Second federal lawsuit filed over union law

MADISON (AP) -- A second federal lawsuit has been filed challenging Wisconsin's new law restricting collective bargaining rights.

The lawsuit by two Madison-based labor unions was filed in U.S. District Court in Madison on Wednesday. The unions represent about 2,700 public workers in Madison and Dane County, including school teachers, city public workers employees and others.

The complaint alleges that the law violates the U.S. Constitution by only applying to some public workers, but exempting police, firefighters, transit workers and emergency medical services employees from most of the provisions.

A spokesman for the state Justice Department which will defend the case had no immediate comment.

Another lawsuit filed last month by a large coalition of unions, including the statewide teachers union, makes similar arguments.
