State Dems' lawyer tries to stop recalls

MADISON (AP) -- An attorney for three Democratic state senators is trying to persuade a judge that recall petitions against his clients are fraudulent.

Jeremy Levinson is arguing before Dane County Circuit Judge Richard Niess that state election officials should have thrown out entire sheets of signatures because some names scattered among them are clearly fraudulent.

The three Democrats and six Republican senators are trying to derail recalls against them stemming from their positions on Gov. Scott Walker's contentious collective bargaining law. Both sides contend the petitions against them are invalid.

Time is short. A primary for the Republicans' challengers is set for Tuesday.

It's unclear when Niess may rule. He is expected to hear detailed arguments from the Republicans' attorneys after he finishes with Levinson.
