Battle Creek - The Wisconsin Woodchucks took an early 3-0 lead, but were hurt by defensive miscues as they fell to the Battle Creek Bombers, 5-3.

The ‘Chucks got on the board first against Bomber starter Chad Jasman. Austin Coleman singled to lead off the second and he came around to score, aided by two errors by the Bombers. Robbie De La Cruz picked up an RBI on a single that brought home Kyle DeMerritt as the ‘Chucks took a 2-0 lead.

In the third, All-Star catcher Carlos Escobar, Jr., bombarded a ball to deep right center field that got over the 20-foot wall of C.O. Brown Stadium for his first home run of the season, as the ‘Chucks took a 3-0 lead.

Woodchuck starter Nick Greene pitched an excellent ball-game, retiring the first ten batters he faced. Greene got into some trouble in the fifth as an error by De La Cruz allowed two unearned runs to score, as the Bombers made it a one-run game.

The Bombers tied it up in the sixth on another unearned run against Justin Burns on an RBI-single by Daniel Rockett.

The defense hurt the ‘Chucks again in the seventh as one earned run and another unearned run scored for the Bombers, making it a 5-3 lead for Battle Creek.

The Woodchucks got the tying run on first in the ninth, but could not convert as they fell to the Bombers, 5-3 in the first game of a three game series. The ‘Chucks fell to 2-1 in the second half of the season, while the Bombers advanced to 2-1. The two teams will face off again tomorrow in Battle Creek at 4:05 CST for game two of the series.
