Lack of water to blame in runner collapse

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Sweltering heat marred the Milwaukee Summerfest's inaugural Rock `n Sole run.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports several runners in the half-marathon and 10K races collapsed in the 85-degree heat Sunday morning after the early hydration stations on the course ran out of water and cups.

Race director Tom Schuler acknowledges the stations along the 2.5-mile-long Hoan Bridge lacked enough water. He largely blamed the short time his crew had to prepare between when the bridge was closed to traffic at 7 a.m. and the half-marathon began at 8 a.m.

At least 10 runners were taken to hospitals. Several runners have complained that medical help was missing on long stretches of the course.

Because so many people were affected, Deputy Fire Chief Jack Christianson says, officials called off the race.
