Legislature plans to pass unemployment extension

Posted:

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin Legislature plans to pass a bill next week that will make federal unemployment benefits available for an additional 13 weeks.

The bill was approved by two legislative committees following a joint public hearing Monday in advance of the Legislature taking it up on July 19.  Gov. Scott Walker says he will sign it.

The extended federal unemployment benefits are designed to serve as a last-ditch safety net for an unemployed person who has exhausted all other state and federal benefits.

They're available after a person has received unemployment for about a year and a half.  Up to 40,000 people are estimated by the state to be eligible for the $363 a week in benefits.

The extended benefits would apply retroactively from their end date in April.
