MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Democratic state Rep. Jennifer Shilling has defeated fake Democratic candidate James D. Smith in the Wisconsin state Senate race representing the La Crosse area.
Shilling had 71 percent of Tuesday's vote, with 41 percent of precincts reporting in unofficial results.
Shilling is in her sixth term in the state Assembly and will now face incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Kapanke in the Aug. 9 recall election for the 32nd Senate District.
Kapanke was one of six Republicans targeted for a recall after he supported Gov. Scott Walker's divisive plan taking away nearly all collective bargaining rights from most public workers.
The state Republican Party orchestrated placing Smith and five other Republicans on the ballot as Democrats to force the primaries, but they did not actively campaign.
