Sheriff's deputy wounds man in Middleton shootout

MIDDLETON, Wis. (AP) -- The Dane County sheriff's office says a deputy shot and wounded a man in a shootout in a hotel in Middleton.

The shooting happened Tuesday afternoon at the Road Star Inn.  The man was taken to a hospital where he was in surgery.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports no deputies were hurt.

Hotel staff called 911 to report a man in the parking lot firing shots.  Sheriff Dave Mahoney says when deputies arrived, hotel staff directed them to a room where the man refused to come out.

Deputies heard the door open and saw the man walking toward them with a shotgun and a handgun.

The deputies ordered the man to drop his weapons, but instead he fired at least once.  One of the deputies returned fire and hit the man multiple times.
