Walker signs veterans secretary appointment bill

MADISON (AP) -- Gov. Scott Walker says he hopes to appoint a new secretary to the Department of Veterans Affairs soon after signing a bill giving him that power.

Walker signed the bill Wednesday surrounded by representatives of numerous veterans organizations.

The new law also expands the size of the Board of Veterans Affairs from seven to nine members and requires that they come from specific parts of the state.

Wisconsin veterans groups had disagreed on whether the governor should have the appointment power or whether it ought to remain at the discretion of the board.

Supporters say giving the governor the appointment power would make the secretary more accountable, while opponents argue it will further politicize the board and department.
