Man shot by deputy in Middleton identified

MIDDLETON, Wis. (AP) -- A Waukesha man is in stable condition after being shot by a Dane County sheriff's deputy in a shootout at a Middleton motel.

The sheriff's office identifies the man as 51-year-old Geoffrey Herling.

Deputies were called Tuesday to the Road Star Inn on a report of a man firing shots in the parking lot. The sheriff's office say the man refused to come out of a motel room, then came out with a shotgun and a handgun and fired at least once. One deputy returned fire and wounded Herling. None of the deputies were hurt.

The sheriff's office says Herling was intoxicated but would not say what his blood-alcohol content was.

Three deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, under the department's critical incident policy.
