Keeping cool: surviving the summer heat wave

WAUSAU (WAOW)--People across our area are getting ready for the upcoming heat wave. With temperatures expected to rise into the 90's, staying cool becomes a priority.

Compared to our rough winters the summer heat may sound like a relief, but experts say think again. Wisconsin Emergency Management report that for the past 50 years summer heat waves have been the biggest weather related killers in the state- even exceeding tornadoes and severe storms.

"Heat related illnesses can take their tole," says Dr. Steven Muhle. "People can become dehydrated, muscle cramps, severe forms like heat stroke can even be life threatening."

His advice: avoid staying outside for long periods of time and stay hydrated.

For those without air conditioning the Salvation Army offers a place to cool down during business hours.
