Battle Creek, MI - The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters scored eight runs over their first three at bats and cruised to an 11-2 win over the Battle Creek Bombers on the road Friday night.
After Alex Edward drove home a run with a single in the first, Brandon Hohl extended the Rafters lead to 3-0 with a two run home run off the left field foul pole. The Rafters scored another run in the second before blowing the game open with four in the third. Josh Cyr doubled a run home and a Sam Montgomery sac fly scored a second tally. Bobby Martin scored from third on a throwing error after a Luke Acosta RBI single.
With eight runs of support, Brad Douthit worked a strong six innings in his ninth start of the season. An unearned run put the Bombers on the board against Douthit in the second. From then on Douthit allowed just one more run on five total hits with two walks and six punch-outs to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Hohl, Edward and Acosta all pieced together excellent days at the plate. Hohl, with a tape measure second home run that completely cleared the park, ended the night 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Edward, extending his on base streak to 25 games, went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Acosta, hitting in the nine spot, reached base four straight times with three hits and an RBI.
With Douthit dominating the Bombers from the third through the sixth, three relievers blanked Battle Creek over the final three innings. Jack Larsen allowed a hit, a walk and struck out one in a scoreless seventh inning. Evan Stermer, after loading the bases with two outs, induced an inning ending line out to rack up a scoreless eighth. Finally, Michael Russo punched out the final two batters of a perfect ninth inning to end the game and give the Rafters their sixth win in their last seven games.
