Rib Mountain quarry turns into simulated plane crash site

RIB MOUNTAIN (WAOW)-- Rib Mountain quarry is the site of an air craft disaster. Emergency agencies from around Marathon County teamed up to stage an emergency landing of a fifty passenger air jet. EMTS and firefighters rescued victims from the simulated crash acted out by volunteers. Some volunteers had minor injuries and others were more serious.

"As soon as someone finds me I might want to try and hold my breath as long as I can so I appear dead," said Volunteer Andrew Heading.

Local EMS and fire crews understand being prepared for this type of emergency can't be planned but hopes practicing will help save lives.

Rib Mountain Firefighter said, "Having these exercises every year it helps us get more comfortable with having large scale incidents so if, unfortunately if anything did happen in Marathon County, especially in this area we're very well prepared and ready to go."

New tools assisted in the emergency exercise. A mass casualty like this can be difficult to assess and it gives rescue crews a chance to test out the new equipment. They sorted patients by level of injuries using tags with a bar code. The new electronic scanning system has the ability to alert hospitals before a patient comes in.

"We put the information in, the hospitals can bring the information up right there in their emergency department where they can see all the patients that we have, what triage level they are and a little bit of information about their injuries," said Trauma Advisory Coordinator Michael Fraley

Advances in technology and training will allow area departments to work together more efficiently in case of a real emergency.
