Battle Creek, MI - A magical week in the history of the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters came to a disappointing close with a 7-6, ten inning loss to the Battle Creek Bombers Saturday night.
Trailing 4-3 into the eighth, the Rafters plated a pair to take the lead, putting themselves in prime position for their fourth straight win. But in the ninth, clinging to the two run lead, the Bombers scored twice off of Joie Dunyon to tie the game and send it to extra frames. After stranding the bases loaded in the top of the tenth, Battle Creek picked up a two out RBI double to win the game.
The come from behind, three run eighth sparked to a start when Cody Koback was hit by the pitch. After a stolen base, Koback scored to tie the game on an error when Alex Edward dropped a bunt to third and the third baseman threw the ball down the line. After a walk to Josh Cyr, Sam Montgomery gave the Rafters a two run lead with a single, scoring Edward and pinch runner Curtis Frisbie. The recent magic had returned for the Rafters, but lasted only until that fated ninth.
Paul Schwendel, the Rafters starter, ran into trouble in the fourth inning. With two walks, a hit batter, two hits for the Bombers produced the four runs and gave them a 4-2 lead. Schwendel gave way to Michael Russo and Skyler Debilzen who held the Bombers scoreless, Russo working the fifth and six and Debilzen striking out one in a scoreless seventh.
In front early, the Rafters got their first three runs from a recently familiar source. Brandon Hohl notched his second straight three RBI day, lashing a two run double in the third. With the Rafters down two in the sixth, Hohl blasted his fourth home run of the season deep to left. Koback ended the night with three hits and scored twice and Alex Edward reached base four more times.
