Eau Claire - The Wisconsin Woodchucks swept the Eau Claire Express in a double-header to win their third and fourth consecutive games, by a score of 5-1 in game one and 4-2 in game two.
In the first game, the Woodchucks got the scoring started in the fourth inning when Seth Batty scored on a groundout by Jamie Bruno.
The Express got their lone run in the fourth on a solo home run by Nick Addison off of Woodchuck starter Jordan Luvisi. Luvisi pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowing only that one run to the Express.
The Woodchucks' offense broke through in the sixth, as they scored three runs, highlighted by a two-run double by Garrett Yrigoyen that scored Kyle DeMerritt and Tyler Heineman. The Woodchucks tacked on an insurance run in the seventh, but they wouldn't need it as Ryan Iverson shut down the Express, picking up his Northwoods League-leading seventh win of the season.
In game two, it was again the Woodchucks that took the first lead of the game. In the third, Brian Carroll and Danny Susdorf both scored on an RBI-single by Carlos Escobar, Jr.
The Express broke through against Woodchuck starter Aaron Gates in the fifth as they scored two runs only one hit, the only hit they got off of Gates in the game. Gates did not factor in the decision, but he threw four and two thirds innings with only the one hit, but he also walked six Express batters.
Mike Gerber led the seventh and final inning off with a walk off of Express pitcher, Mahlon Zimmerman. The following batter, Escobar, Jr., was hit in the lower part of his back to put runners on first and second for Jamie Bruno. Bruno dropped down a sacrifice bunt that advanced both runners a base. With Cody Regis at the plate, a wild pitch by Zimmerman allowed Gerber to score the go-ahead run as Escobar advanced to third, giving the ‘Chucks a 3-2 lead. Escobar, Jr., scored later in the inning to make it a two-run game on a sacrifice fly by Kyle DeMerritt.
Anthony Drobnick came in to close out the game for the Woodchucks in the seventh, and retired the Express in order, giving the Woodchucks their fourth straight victory and putting them in second place in the Northwoods League South Division.
The Woodchucks improved to 7-4 on the second half, while the Express fell to 2-9.
