MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A suspect was critically injured when he was shot by a Milwaukee police officer.
The Milwaukee Police Department says the officer saw a man climbing a fence at a scrap metal company Saturday, holding a large suitcase. Police say he resisted, and one witness reported he tried to take the officer's gun. The suspect then ran.
Police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz says a "violent struggle" ensued when the officer caught up.
She says the officer believed he was about to lose consciousness and feared for his life, so he shot the suspect.
Police say the 42-year-old suspect has an extensive arrest history.
The 37-year-old officer suffered cuts and scrapes to his arms.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports it's the ninth time a Milwaukee police officer has shot someone this year.
