PORTAGE COUNTY (PRESS RELEASE) - On July 18th, 2011, at approximately 9:46 am, the Portage County Sheriff's Office received a report that the Grand Rapids Police Department and Wood County Sheriff's Office were pursuing a motor vehicle in the Town of Grand Rapids. The lone male suspect was wanted on several warrants and felony charges including escape, eluding an officer, and operating a motor vehicle without owners consent. Also, the suspect was fleeing in a vehicle that was reported stolen from the City of Marshfield.
The pursuit entered Portage County on State Highway 54 in the Town of Plover and continued east through the Village of Plover. Portage County Sheriff's deputies assisted in the pursuit. Officers of the Plover Police Department assisted by deploying Mechanical Stop Devices (spike strips) as the suspect fled through the Village of Plover. The tactic deflated the suspect's tires, however he refused to stop and surrender. The pursuit ended when a Portage County Sheriff's Deputy used the pursuit intervention technique to stop the suspect at the intersection of Mill Street and County Highways A/B in the Village of Amherst. The suspect was apprehended and turned over to officers of the Grand Rapids Police Department and the Wood County Sheriff's Office.
There were no injuries as a result of the pursuit and a Portage County Sheriff's Office squad car suffered only minor damage. The stolen vehicle was recovered and released to the Marshfield Police Department. The male suspect remains in custody at this time on several felony charges through the various agencies involved.
