Wisconsin Senate to take up redistricting bills

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin state Senate plans to vote Tuesday on Republican-drawn maps that create new political boundary lines for Congress and members of the state Legislature.

The GOP-controlled Senate is taking up redistricting first before the Assembly, also under Republican control, takes up the maps on Wednesday.

Democrats say the maps are an unconstitutional power grab that redraw the lines in such a way to ensure more Republican victories over the next decade. But Republicans say the new maps fairly account for the state's population growth since 2000.

Federal courts drew the legislative maps the past three decades.

A federal lawsuit has already been filed this year.

Democrats do not have the votes to force changes to the maps before the pass the Legislature.
