MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- On one of the hottest days of the year, winter is on the mind of the Legislature's budget committee.
The Joint Finance Committee on Tuesday unanimously approved spending nearly $20 million more than planned to reimburse counties for winter maintenance costs and to replenish road salt reserves.
The state Department of Transportation budgeted $41 million for a variety of maintenance costs for last winter, but late-season costs added to the total by $4 million.
The committee also approved spending an additional $15.6 million to pay for salt purchased last year and to replenish supplies.
The panel also approved $10.3 million for emergency maintenance work on the Hoan Bridge in Milwaukee and $3.1 million to replace deteriorating highway lighting masts along the interstates in Milwaukee County.
