Hot weather hurting cows, milk production

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) -- Some local dairy farmers say the hot weather is messing with cows and their milk.

A day or two of heat doesn't mean much, but farmers say this prolonged heat wave is taking its toll.

Floyd Baumann is co-owner of Twin B Dairy Farms in Marathon County. Right now, in addition to his normal work, he's got another big job—helping his cows stay cool.

"We've got all our fans running in the barn, and we actually added several fans to help push air through the barn," said Baumann.

But the cows in that third-generation family farm are having a tough time.

"Quite a bit of our milk production, we're down quite a bit," said Baumann. "I think the longer this goes on, the harder it's going to get on them."

Baumann says he tries to make sure his cows stay comfortable and have plenty of fresh water. But it only goes so far.

"The feed intake's really dropped now," said Baumann. "You can tell it's really taking a toll on the cows now."

And it takes a toll on workers who also have to toil in the heat.

"We try doing a lot of our harder work or work that needs to be done in the morning," said Baumann.

Besides that, they can only wait until Mother Nature decides to give everybody a break.
