Keeping young athletes cool under the summer sun

WAUSAU (WAOW)--Hot and humid weather can definitely take a toll on young athletes. With many kids participating in summer camps and sports leagues, coaches take extra care to protect players.

While the sun beat down much hotter than usual on Wednesday, it wasn't strong enough to keep striker Celeste Taylor off the soccer field. "I really felt the heat. I ran up and down the field a lot," she said.

For coaches, the goal is to have players drink lots of water. Because you can't bend it like Beckham, unless you hydrate like him.

Parent turned coach Mark Sukanen kept kids cool by allowing for lots of breaks. Coaches at Airport Park also shortened quarters to keep kids from tiring out.

"We had a sub tonight so we rotated in and each kid got a break. If they didn't have a break, we had them play goalie and goalie is a little easier," he said.

Players brought water bottles and squirt bottles to stay cool and up the fun level. For Taylor, drinking water is good, but she says you can have too much of a good thing. "I didn't drink a lot of water, but I drank quite a bit because if you drink too much your stomach hurts and you get a cramp."

Managing to stay cool in extreme heat, while still hitting the back of the net.
