Teachers will not join Walker in education effort

Posted:

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The head of the statewide teachers union says her group will not join Gov. Scott Walker's effort to create a new state accountability system to replace the federal No Child Left Behind.

Union president Mary Bell says that teachers of the Wisconsin Education Association Council don't trust Walker given his proposal taking away nearly all their collective bargaining rights.

Walker wanted WEAC's participation in the new accountability system even if they didn't support him in the past. Walker joined forces along with state superintendent Tony Evers, who also opposed his union plan.

Walker's idea is to create a system that can replace the rules of the federal No Child Left Behind law, which Walker and Evers agree are ineffective.
