MANTITOWISH WATERS (WAOW)- It's a scene straight from a gangster film. A rebel gang with machine guns and getaway cars, a story similar to the legacy John Dillinger was notoriously known for.
His story went to Hollywood and in the 2009 film public enemies. John Dillinger played by actor Johnny Depp about the bank robber who fell in love with the chase.
Dillinger's Great Nephew Jeff Scalf reminisces about the stories shared with his grandmother, "John was more in love with the pursuit then he was with the money. He really enjoyed making law enforcement and government officials look foolish."
It's that pursuit which brought him to Little Bohemia in Mantitowish Waters, where his stay leaked to Chicago Federals and resulted in a gun fight that almost ended his life.
He was all over law enforcement's radar and anyone spotted with him was put on high alert. Evelyn Frechette, known to friends as Billie crossed paths with the bank robber and fell in love.
Her story is what sparked Larry Schroeder to put ink to paper and now has plans to make it film. He says it's a love story of a different kind.
"You can't pick who you fall in love with and that was her only crime. She is not Bonnie Parker of the Bonnie and Clyde story that's out there."
Now it's Billie's love story ripped from the pages of history.
