Bodies of two missing boaters found days after accident
TOWN OF WHEATON (WAOW)--Investigators are working hard to piece together the details of a deadly boat crash that left four dead and three injured on the Chippewa River.
"With the waterway like this, any boat accident investigation is really difficult because you don't have skid marks, you don't have the pieces that come off of the vehicles aren't laying there on the roadway. Evidence sinks, evidence floats away," said DNR Warden Scott Bowe.
Search crews found the bodies of two missing boaters Sunday morning. Autopsies will be performed Monday. Now, all of the boaters involved in the accident have been accounted for.
The crash occurred late Friday night when a pontoon boat carrying six people collided head-on with a speedboat. The group on the larger boat was celebrating a weekend wedding.
Authorities say the crash killed the driver of the speedboat and a member of the wedding party.
The Sheriff's Department will be interviewing neighbors who live along the river to try and find out what happened. Authorities believe alcohol could have been a factor. Toxicology reports are being conducted.
