Senate to approve unemployment extension next week

MADISON (AP) -- Republicans in control of the Wisconsin state Senate plan to pass a bill next week that extends federal unemployment benefits for 13 weeks, but that would not eliminate a one-week waiting period to start collecting unemployment.

Senate Republicans joined with Democrats last week in voting 30-3 to do away with the waiting period and extend the benefits. But the GOP-controlled Assembly didn't agree with eliminating the waiting period and passed the extension bill without that part.

The bill did not pass the Legislature because it cleared each house in a different form.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said Monday that the Senate will vote on Aug. 1 to concur with the action taken by the Assembly approving the extension but keeping the delay in place.
