Shelters struggle to accommodate new puppy mill laws

MERRILL (WAOW)-- Because of a new state puppy mill law, stray pets may face more challenges in finding homes.

Under Wisconsin Act 90, a law that went into effect on June 1st, area shelters have to meet new space and medical requirements.

Lincoln County Humane Society Board President Pat Hoerstmann says the law has good intentions aimed at stopping unethical breeders, but meeting the new regulations could get expensive.

"When the puppy mills were first introduced, we kind of were supportive because we've seen the horrible conditions in some of these puppy mills," Hoerstmann says. "But we knew also it would affect us."

He says he hopes community support will help cover the need for bigger kennels and mandatory veterinary checks.
