Victims in plane crash were Ill., man, Wis. woman

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) -- Fond du Lac County authorities have identified the two people killed when their small plane crashed into Lake Winnebago.

The pilot was identified Tuesday as 47-year-old Steven Staples of Makanda, Ill. His passenger was 36-year-old Michelle Palermo of Kimberly.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene after their plane crashed Monday just before noon.

Authorities say the two were traveling from the Experimental Aircraft Association's AirVenture, which started that morning in Oshkosh.

Boaters who rushed to the scene included 29-year-old Scott Klein. He says the plane was in about 6 feet of water, and rescuers had to struggle to find the door.

He tells The Post-Crescent of Appleton ( ) that if only the crash had happened 100 yards further east the plane would have been in waters only waist-deep.
