Marshfield pub aims for smarter meals

MARSHFIELD (WAOW) --  They're cooking in style. And cutting the fat from their menu.  Blue Heron Brew Pub in Marshfield has teamed up with "Get Active Wisconsin" to help put healthier meals on their menu.

And finding those smart meals won't be hard.

"There will be a smart meal symbol on the menu, I believe it is a little red fork with white circle to signify healthier options," Sous Chef, Dan Volkey said.

But staying fit does has its challenges.

"For a meal to qualify it has be less than 700 calories and have two or more servings of fruits and vegetables and whole grains," Blue Heron Pub server Allison Lindquist explains.

All that information goes into a computer program that calculates the ingredients and concludes if the meal is a Smart Meal or not.

Most of their Smart Meals will be made with locally grown, fresh produce from farmers markets.

"We get to help out a local farming family and help our customers eat healthy," Volkey explains.

And their customers welcome the change.

"I think its great for kids, rather than thinking french fries are the end of the world. It is time to start eating some carrots," pub regular Mike Brennan says.

If anyone knows food, it's him.
